Add to myYahoo! You may not realize this, but "us SciBlings" do occasionally talk to each other behind the scenes, and one thing that we like to talk about is .. you! One of my commenters on the previous thread wrote something that has made me laugh most of the evening, so I shared this comment with my fellow SciBlings and they loved it too. So now, inspired by my anonymous commenter, two of us are having a little contest.
What do you think Noah's Ark looked like with six (or is it eleven?) species of giraffes on board? Please show us in a picture because as they say, a picture is worth a thousand words. Plus, you all know how much I love graphics, and so I will proudly display these images on my blog, along with a link back to your blog, your priest's email or, heck, even your church's phone number. (Okay, I'll just post the link to the image if you insist on not allowing me to show it on my blog, boohoo). Feel free to make it a LOLgiraffe picture if that's what floats your er, boat (pun intended). Post the links in the comments here or on the giraffe entry and we'll highlight them and decide on the winners after the holidays. I am sure there will be a prize of some sort involved, even if I have to dip into my book collection to make it so (and if you have any idea about the size and quality of my book collection, you'll be jumping at this opportunity).

Add to myYahoo!Last Christmas, my wife gave me a dozen golf balls. Except for one, the balls were identical in every respect. The odd ball looked identical, but its density was slightly different from the other eleven. As I unwrapped my gift, she handed me a scale or balance with two pans suspended from a

Add to myYahoo!Sunset approaches, so I have to go outside and do the evening chant to the Old Dark Ones and I just don't have time to deal with this colossal wanker, Roland S. Martin. He's a commentator on CNN (why, oh why, can't we have better media?) It's a crazy whine that demands a return to "traditional values", whatever those are, and complaining a backlash against Christianity. I like that dimbulbs like Martin are feeling pressured — it's about time stupid ideas were feeling the heat.
Anyway, the sacred rites of the Festival of Snata Kluahz summon me, so I'll leave Greg Laden the joy of the ritual evisceration.

How many species of giraffes are there? Well, some people have actually thought about this throughout the decades, and they decided that there is only one species. However, a paper published today in BMC Biology convincingly demonstrates that giraffes are actually comprised of at least six, and possibly as many as eleven separate species instead of just one, as originally thought.
