Gene Associated with Blood Glucose Concentration
Identified

Scientists from the Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, USA, identified a gene, hexokinase-1, that is linked to blood concentration variation of glycated hemoglobin.  Glycated hemoglobin has been used as index of long-term blood glucose concentration in the follow-up of type 2 diabetes patients.  This study involved 14,618 Caucasian women from the Women’s Genome Health [...]

Science Online '09 Presentation

tags: annual science communication conference, ScienceOnline'09, Research Triangle Park, science blogging conference

Okay everyone, you may be aware of the fact that I will be co-hosting a session about writing about nature on a blog at the upcoming ScienceOnline '09 conference in North Carolina. As you can tell from the official schedule, I and my colleague, Kevin Zelnio, will be hosting our session first thing on Sunday morning, 18 January 2008. Of course, my goal is to make this a useful and productive time for all of you, whether you attend in real life or you follow along on the resulting podcasts or via live blogging, so a wiki has been created where we all can discuss ideas (or you can post them in the comments section here). Kevin will be dropping in to read comments as well, and will likely post a similar request for reader input on his blog.

Jupiter and Ganymede from Hubble

I'm practically the last space blogger in the world to get to this (and it was only released this morning! How can I compete with that?), but I think it's worth giving my take on it anyway: a beautiful photo captured by the Hubble Space Telescope in natural colors, showing Jupiter and its largest moon Ganymede. Ganymede was just setting behind Jupiter's limb when the photo was taken; the photo was actually part of a series taken through many ....

New Bird Species Discovered

tags: bpr3.org/?p=52, birds, aves, ornithology, Zosterops somadikartai, Togian white-eye, Indonesia, Sulawesi

An undated artist's rendering of Zosterops somadikartai, or Togian white-eye.

This small greenish bird that has been playing hide-and-seek with ornithologists on a remote Indonesian island since 1996, but was declared a newly discovered species on March 14, 2008 and promptly recommended for endangered lists.

Sharp-eyed scientists have discovered a new species of bird on a remote Indonesian archipelago in the Southern Pacific Ocean. A formal description of this new species, the Togian white-eye, Zosterops somadikartai, was just published in the March issue of the ornithological journal, The Wilson Journal of Ornithology. Not only was this bird recognized as a new species, but its population and home range were so small that this species was recommended to be added to international endangered species lists. Ditch science (no, really)

A poster presented yesterday put ditch digging in a whole new context. Researchers at Cornell University are finding that roadside ditches act like a highway network for pollution.I spoke with Cornell graduate student Brian Buchanan about his research,[...]

Did you know that you can do more than just read

I'm proud of the work I do on this blog -- from covering conferences like the American Geophysical Union meeting, to reporting on the launches and landings of missions like Chandrayaan-1 and Phoenix, to digging up space history like I did in my White Rock series. I regularly get kind email from you readers, so I know people enjoy all these things. But now I'd like to ask you all to do a bit more -- to show that you value The Planetary ....
