no, cosmic rays arent to blame for climate change

According to astrophysicist Charles Wang, supernovas belching out cosmic rays are clouding our skies and warming the planet. Certainly, dumping greenhouses gases into the atmosphere isn’t exactly helping matters, but the emissions from dying stars shouldn’t be overlooked. There isn’t very much detail in his press release, but those of us who read scientific literature [...]

US space probe leaves asteroid's orbit, NASA says

Washington (AFP) Sept 6, 2012
The US space probe Dawn has left the orbit of Vesta, one of the biggest asteroids in the solar system, and is headed for a rendezvous with the dwarf planet Ceres in February 2015, NASA said. Dawn left behind Vesta at around 0626 GMT on September 5, after nearly a year spent circling the asteroid and mapping its previously uncharted surface, NASA said on its website. "The findings are hel

ISS crew complete space station repair

Washington (AFP) Sept 5, 2012
Two International Space Station crew members on Wednesday successfully completed a spacewalk to install a new power switching unit, the US space agency NASA said. American Sunita Williams and Japan's Akihiko Hoshide had to contend with a sticky bolt that prevented them from completing the installation in a previous spacewalk last week. The ISS has four of the so-called Main Bus Switching

Northrop Grumman Aids Navigation of NASA's
Curiosity Mars Rover

Woodland Hills, CA (SPX) Sep 07, 2012
Northrop Grumman supplied the navigation and pointing aid for NASA's Curiosity Mars rover, which recently began a historic two-year exploration of Mars. Northrop Grumman's LN-200S is a lightweight, fiber-optic inertial measurement unit (IMU) that will help guide the Mars rover as it investigates the viability of microbial life on the planet - now or in the past. The LN-200S is a critical n

NASA's Mars rover parked to test robotic arm

Washington (AFP) Sept 6, 2012
NASA's Curiosity rover has temporarily halted its journey across the surface of Mars as it tests the tools on its robotic arm, the US space agency said Thursday. The $2.5 billion craft - which landed in Gale Crater on the Red Planet on August 6 - has covered more than a football field's distance since it began trundling eastward. That's about a quarter of the distance to the first majo

NASA Mars Rover Curiosity Begins Arm-Work Phase

Pasadena CA (JPL) Sep 07, 2012
After driving more than a football field's length since landing, NASA's Mars rover Curiosity is spending several days preparing for full use of the tools on its arm. Curiosity extended its robotic arm Wednesday in the first of six to10 consecutive days of planned activities to test the 7-foot (2.1-meter) arm and the tools it manipulates. "We will be putting the arm through a range of motio

Mars's dramatic climate variations are driven by
the Sun

Copenhagen, Denmark (SPX) Sep 07, 2012
On Mars's poles there are ice caps of ice and dust with layers that reflect to past climate variations on Mars. Researchers from the Niels Bohr Institute have related the layers in the ice cap on Mars's north pole to variations in solar insolation on Mars, thus established the first dated climate history for Mars, where ice and dust accumulation has been driven by variations in insolation. The r

Hadley Crater - closing in on the Martian
interior

Berlin, Germany (SPX) Sep 07, 2012
Hadley Crater on Mars has been subject to several impacts by large asteroids in the course of its history. The 'craters within a crater' formed in this way give us a view over two kilometres into the Martian crust. This was revealed in images acquired with the High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) on 9 April 2012. The HRSC camera on board ESA's Mars Express spacecraft is operated by the Ger

Chicago (AFP) Sept 6, 2012
The first man on the moon will be buried at sea, a spokesman for Neil Armstrong's family said Thursday. "I suspect it will be a private service," spokesman Rick Miller told AFP. He said further details were not immediately available. The burial will take place after a September 13 public memorial in the US capital.
