If a group of tourists piled out of a transport vehicle onto the surface of Mars, they'd no doubt start snapping pictures wildly. NASA's Curiosity rover, set to touch down on the Red Planet the evening of Aug. 5 PDT (early morning EDT), will take a more careful approach to capturing its first scenic views. The car-size rover's very first images will come from the one-megapixel Hazard-Avoid

Opportunity has been roving at the north end of Cape York on the rim of Endeavour Crater. However, activity will be constrained for the period ahead as Opportunity prepares for the arrival of Curiosity. The project is preplanning nine day or sols of activity around the landing time of Curiosity, so as not to require Deep Space Network tracking antenna coverage. On Sol 3024 (July 26,

Three aerospace firms have scored a total of $1.1 billion in NASA contracts to compete to build the next spacecraft to carry astronauts to the International Space Station after the shuttle program's end. The awards, announced Friday, went to SpaceX, Boeing and Sierra Nevada Corporation, and aim to support efforts to return astronauts to space via US-made transport in the next five years.

The weather conditions on Mars are expected to be favorable when NASA's $2.5 billion Mars Science Laboratory attempts its risky landing on August 6, the US space agency said Saturday. "Mars is playing nice and we are going to get good conditions for Sunday," said MSL deputy project scientist Ashwin Vasavada at a new briefing ahead of the landing set for 0531 GMT on Monday (10:31 pm on Sunday

Much like a treasure map branded with an 'X' to mark the site of buried bounty, NASA's rover Curiosity will be targeting its very own 'X' inside Gale Crater, to seek out the signs of past water - and maybe even life - on the Red Planet. Mars Express will play an important role in monitoring the spectacular delivery of Curiosity to the martian surface during the 'seven minutes of terror' th

India's government has cleared plans to put an orbital probe around Mars next year to study the red planet's climate and geology, a report said Saturday. The mission would mark another step in India's ambitious space programme, which placed a probe on the moon three years ago and envisages its first manned mission in 2016. A cabinet meeting late Friday approved the mission as India aim

Are we alone? Or was there life on another planet? NASA's $2.5 billion dream machine, the Mars Science Laboratory, aims to take the first steps toward finding out when it nears Mars's surface on Monday. The planet is Earth's closest neighbor, and scientists have found signs of water there, hinting that some form of life was once likely, even though Mars is now a dry place with a thin atmosph
