Society for Integrative and Comparative Biology
Meeting

So I've mentioned this before, but SICB is almost upon us. I am boarding my plane tomorrow at 630 in the morning (to avoid the NYC morning gridlock) to attend SICB. I should arrive in Phoenix before noon. There will be several get-togethers with our readers that you are invited to attend;

Snow for sale!

I was highly amused to read on Physorg.com about one Colorado woman's snow sale on Ebay?yep, that's right, she's selling the snow that fell on her property thanks to the recent blizzards.

Apparently she didn't originally expect to find any buyers?she posted just for a laugh?but as of the time of this blog post, she had received 72 bids on her most recent sale (her Ebay post reads, "1 more time! End of 2006 snow! We're overstocked! All of it must go!," so I'm guessing there have been other successful sales), and the current price was $39.89. Her caveats: absolutely no refunds, and quantities vary. The best part, however, is the shipping details:

Just to be clear...we can ship your snow 1 of 3 ways. 1) For the shipping stated in the auction we'll put snow in a leakproof container (jar or zip lock bag) and ship it in a box. Yes, it will melt. You'll have to refreeze it and shave it to return it to it's natural state. 2) To keep it frozen we need to use dry ice and a foam cooler and ship it overnight fedx. Probably a gallon zip lock bag of snow. That will be a lot more, but you'll get snow. 3) You can come get it...
I particularly love the last option (she also mentions earlier in the post that people who might like to avoid paying shipping charges should feel free to come to her home with a dump truck and shovel). To find people willing to pay you to shovel snow from your driveway? Brilliant.

What you need to know about CA-MRSA

Staphylococcus aureus, often referred to simply as "staph," are bacteria commonly carried on the skin or in the nose of healthy people. Approximately 25% to 30% of the population is colonized (when bacteria are present, but not causing an infection) in the nose with staph bacteria. Sometimes, staph can cause an infection. Staph bacteria are one of the most common causes of skin infections in the United States.

Scientific optimism!

Edge has this annual question, where they ask a lot of smart people something general and provocative, and collect the essays into a webpage. This year, the question is "What are you optimistic about? And why?"

There are a lot of answers, many of them very specific—people are optimistic about the new supercollider, or climate change, or something specific to their discipline—while others are so general that they don't say much (Humans will survive, somehow!). What I thought interesting, though, is that there was a bit of a trend to one particular kind of answer. Some of the people who answered in this particular way are:

In short, what all of these writers have in common is that they all believe people are going to WAKE UP. They're going to appreciate evidence and rational thinking and skepticism and generally, science more — they're going to develop more demanding standards for truth, and they're going to look at what people tell them more critically.

What a splendid hope! It's about time we had a new Enlightenment.

I'm not quite so optimistic about the possibility of it actually happening, but I can join in the wishful thinking — yes, these would all be grand changes to see occur. Let's all work towards making it happen.
